Botulinum Toxin Type A has been used for over 20 years to treat lines and wrinkles and to slow down the ageing process. It has an excellent safety and efficacy profile and there are many indications for its use. Most of the treatments using Botox ® are for lines and wrinkles in the upper part of the face but in the hands of an experienced plastic surgeon and team it can be used to treat a range of facial asymmetries, facial palsy, as well as ageing concerns.
Botox is a drug made from a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, the toxin that causes a food poisoning called botulism. Medical grade botulinum toxin blocks nerve activity in the muscles, at the junction of the nerve fibre and the muscle fibre. When injected directly into a facial muscle it will temporarily (3 to 4 months) disable the muscle and stop it from contracting.
The clinical effect is limited to the muscle.
Botulinum Toxin has no negative systemic side effects beyond the injection site.
